Atlantic Constellation

The Atlantic Constellation is a Spain–Portugal Earth observation programme based on a coordinated constellation of small satellites. Its goal is to provide frequent and high-resolution monitoring of the Earth system to support applications in climate observation, environmental management, maritime surveillance, and emergency response.


Reimagining Earth monitoring through a coordinated constellation of multi-sensor microsatellites

The mission is designed as a distributed satellite system in which multiple microsatellites operate in coordinated orbits to increase revisit time and improve temporal coverage compared to traditional single-satellite missions. This architecture enables more continuous and responsive observations of dynamic Earth processes.

The constellation will deliver geophysical information derived from multiple complementary payloads, contributing to the monitoring of land, ocean, and cryosphere variables. These data products are intended to support both scientific research and operational services related to environmental and climate challenges.

The Spanish component consists of eight microsatellites. Each of these microsatellites will integrate four onboard instruments for collecting terrestrial data: multispectral optical cameras, which will provide a privileged view of the globe; GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) reflectometry sensor, a technology that measures the reflections of satellite navigation signals; IoT (Internet of Things), which allows the microsatellites to collect in-situ data in remote areas and transmitting this information affordably; and an AIS receiver (Automatic Identification System), a technology for locating vessels and monitoring maritime activity beyond visibility limitations.

ICE-CSIC's participation

ICE-CSIC is responsible for one of the four payloads present in every satellite of the constellation: the GNSS reflectometer (GNSS-R), a remote sensing technique that uses satellite signals bounced off the Earth's surface to obtain information. In addition, ICE-CSIC also develops the algorithms to extract the geophysical information from the low level data. These algorithms, which will produce surface inundation information, soil moisture, and ocean surface winds, will run operationally in the mission's ground segment once the satellites are launched into their orbits.
