The year 2024 was a remarkable one for ICE-CSIC due to the many accomplishments achieved by our members. In addition, 2024 was very special because ICE-CSIC celebrated its 25th anniversary. On 21 December 1999, CSIC officially created our institute and since then we have been at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovation.
This year was also significant, as it brought several important changes to the Institute. Most notably, Aldo Serenelli was officially appointed as the new director of ICE-CSIC. Mar Mezcua and Serni Ribó joined the managing team, as they were named scientific and technical deputy directors, respectively. Another important change was the restructuring of the former two science departments into four new departments.
The Institute kept growing during 2024 for a total of 161 ICE-CSIC personnel as of 31 December 2024. The Institute welcomed six permanent positions: Weiqiang Li, Anaëlle Maury, Alessandro Paturno, Xavier Mestre, Isabel Pérez and José Luis Gálvez.
In 2024, ICE-CSIC personnel contributed to a total of 372 peer-reviewed publications, 109.5 more than the average between 2020 and 2023. 2024 was a key year for ICE-CSIC's space missions. For instance, LISA was officially adopted by ESA and Euclid released early scientific papers. Additionally, Einstein Probe and Hera were launched to explore X-ray transients and the Didymos-Dimorphos asteroid system, respectively.
Furthermore, we held the the 7th edition of the ICE-CSIC Summer School, which welcomed around 42 early-career researchers from 17 different countries and who spent two weeks at the Institute learning about exoplanetary science from renowned experts in the field.
2024 highlights
- ICE-CSIC researchers published a total of 372 publications: 93% of them, in 1st quartile journals.
- We grew a lot during the last year: for the first time we passed the mark of 155 people working at the institute, for a total of 161 people as of 31 December 2024.
- We have 3 new Faculty members: Weiqiang Li, Anaëlle Maury and Alessandro Patruno.
- We’re a diverse institute. Our personnel is composed of 117 men and 44 women. In addition, 67 of the 161 people working at the Institute are from abroad.
- We started 19 new projects for a total of 4.45 million € in funding, and kept 41 active projects.
- 5 PhD theses and 8 Master theses were defended.
- 21 press releases with 1,262 media impacts in Spanish media and over 173,164 people reached by ICE-CSIC communication actions.
